Friday Skywatch at Riverside Field

Friday, 7:30 PM · Riverside Field, north entrance · Clear-sky backup window posted same day

A typical evening starts with a short orientation, then guided naked-eye constellation spotting, followed by telescope viewing in small rotating groups. Newcomers are welcomed at check-in and paired with a volunteer host.

What newcomers can expect

No prior experience is needed. We explain the plan in plain language, point out key objects in the sky, and leave time for questions. You can participate quietly, observe at your own comfort level, and leave whenever needed.

Simple things to bring

  • • A warm extra layer and comfortable shoes
  • • A small red-light flashlight to protect night vision
  • • Water, and optional binoculars if you have them

Visit prep FAQ

Quick answers to common first-visit questions so you can join a meetup with confidence.

Do I need prior astronomy experience?

Not at all—beginners are always welcome, and members explain what you’re seeing in plain language.

Do I need to bring my own telescope or equipment?

No equipment is required. Shared club telescopes are usually available, and binoculars are great if you have them.

What happens if the weather changes?

If skies are poor, we post updates on the Meetups page and may shift to a shorter indoor-style discussion.

How often does the club meet?

Most months include at least one planned skywatching meetup, with extra sessions during major celestial events.

What does a first visit usually feel like?

Friendly and low-pressure—you can observe quietly, ask questions anytime, and participate at your own pace.
